Enchantress Commander: Draw Cards Off Every Enchantment
Learn how to build an Enchantress deck in Commander. Discover the best enchantress effects, key enchantments, and commanders for turning every Aura and Saga into a card.
Enchantress decks turn your enchantments into a card-drawing engine. Instead of relying on dedicated draw spells, you build around creatures and effects that reward you every time an enchantment hits the battlefield. Play a Pacifism, draw a card. Play a Sphere of Safety, draw a card. Over a long grindy game, an Enchantress deck can bury the table in card advantage while also building a genuinely resilient board of auras, sagas, and utility enchantments.
What Makes a Good Enchantress Deck?
A good Enchantress deck needs three things: enchantress effects that turn enchantments into cards, a critical mass of enchantments worth casting, and protection to keep your engine creatures alive.
Enchantress Effects
These creatures and enchantments are the engine. They trigger every time you cast an enchantment, so the more of them you have, the more consistently you draw extra cards.
- Argothian Enchantress: Whenever you cast an enchantment spell, draw a card.
- Verduran Enchantress: The original enchantress effect — draw a card whenever an enchantment enters under your control.
- Setessan Champion: Draws a card and grants +1/+1 counters whenever an enchantment enters the battlefield under your control.
- Eidolon of Blossoms: A Constellation creature that draws a card whenever an enchantment enters the battlefield under your control, including itself.
Enchantments Worth Playing
To make the engine work, you need a deck full of enchantments that do something on their own, not just filler.
- Utopia Sprawl: An enchantment that ramps you a color of mana, doubling as both ramp and an enchantress trigger.
- Sphere of Safety: Taxes attackers based on the number of enchantments you control, turning your engine into a defensive wall.
- Aura Shards: Lets you sacrifice an enchantment to destroy an artifact or creature, giving your enchantments a second job.
- Solemnity: Shuts off counters on the board while still counting as an enchantment trigger.
Best Enchantress Commanders
Sythis, Harvester of Sunlight
Sythis gains you life and draws you a card whenever an enchantment enters the battlefield under your control, including herself and Auras attached to opponents' permanents. She is the most direct enchantress commander available and doubles as a lifegain engine.
Estrid, the Masked
Estrid can untap herself and other permanents each turn if she's enchanted, encouraging you to stack Auras on her for protection while still filling the battlefield with enchantments to trigger your other engine pieces.
Zur the Enchanter
Zur tutors an enchantment costing three or less straight onto the battlefield whenever he connects in combat, letting you assemble your enchantress package or a game-ending lock piece on demand.
Building an Enchantress Deck
Here's a step-by-step guide to building an Enchantress deck:
- Choose your commander: Sythis, Estrid, and Zur are the most popular starting points, each with a different angle on the archetype.
- Add enchantress effects: Run every enchantress creature your colors support — Argothian Enchantress, Verduran Enchantress, Setessan Champion, and Eidolon of Blossoms.
- Fill out your enchantment package: Aim for 25-30 enchantments, mixing removal, ramp, and value pieces so every draw trigger also does something.
- Add protection: Run a handful of Auras like Spirit Mantle or Ethereal Armor that make your key creatures hard to remove.
- Add ramp: Run 8-10 ramp sources, prioritizing enchantment-based ramp like Utopia Sprawl and Wild Growth.
- Add card draw backup: A few non-enchantment draw spells smooth out games where you're light on enchantments early.
- Test and iterate: Play your deck and see how consistently the engine comes online. Cut enchantments that don't pull their weight.
Checking Your Enchantress Deck with Rate My Decks
When you analyze your deck with Rate My Decks, we detect your deck's archetype and compare it to the optimal build for that archetype. If your Enchantress deck is light on enchantress effects or running too few enchantments to trigger them consistently, we'll flag it as a weakness and suggest additions.
