Landfall Commander Guide: Turn Every Land Drop Into a Threat
Learn how to build a Landfall deck in Commander. Discover the best landfall payoffs, extra land drop effects, fetchlands, and commanders for this rewarding archetype.
Landfall decks turn the most basic action in Magic — playing a land — into a source of value, damage, or board presence. Where most decks treat lands as a means to an end, Landfall decks treat every land drop as a trigger worth maximizing. If you like grinding out incremental advantage and occasionally ending the game with an army of 8/8 Elementals, Landfall is one of the most rewarding archetypes to build.
What Makes a Good Landfall Deck?
A strong Landfall deck needs three pieces working together: landfall payoffs that reward you for playing lands, ways to play extra lands each turn, and land recursion so you can keep triggering those payoffs even after your lands are already down.
Landfall Payoffs
These are the cards that actually convert land drops into game-winning value:
- Avenger of Zendikar: Creates a 0/1 Plant token for each land you control when it enters, then pumps your Plants whenever you play a land.
- Rampaging Baloths: Creates a 4/4 Beast token whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control.
- Lotus Cobra: Adds mana whenever a land enters under your control, turning fetchlands into ramp spells.
- Scute Swarm: Doubles its own token count on landfall, snowballing into a huge army if left unchecked.
- Tireless Provisioner: Creates a Treasure token on landfall and gives your Food and Treasure tokens extra utility.
Extra Land Drops
The more lands you play per turn, the more often your payoffs trigger. Cards like Exploration and Azusa, Lost but Seeking let you play additional lands each turn, while Scapeshift-style effects let you sacrifice and search for several lands at once, triggering every landfall payoff in one shot.
Land Recursion and Fetchlands
Fetchlands like Windswept Heath and Scalding Tarn are premium Landfall enablers because they let you sacrifice a land and immediately fetch a new one, triggering landfall twice in a single action. Crucible of Worlds and Ramunap Excavator let you replay lands from your graveyard, turning fetchlands and other sacrificed lands into repeatable landfall engines.
Best Landfall Commanders
Tatyova, Benthic Druid
Tatyova draws you a card and gains you a life every time a land enters the battlefield under your control. She turns your normal land drops into card advantage, and pairs perfectly with extra land drops and fetchlands to keep your hand full.
Omnath, Locus of Rage
Omnath creates a 5/5 Elemental token whenever a landfall trigger goes off from a land you control, and deals damage to an opponent whenever one of those Elementals dies. He's a natural fit alongside Avenger of Zendikar and Rampaging Baloths for a go-wide landfall strategy.
Lord Windgrace
Lord Windgrace gives you card advantage from your graveyard and can wipe the board, making him a great fit for a slower, grindier Landfall build that leans on land recursion rather than pure aggression.
Building a Landfall Deck
- Choose your commander: Tatyova, Omnath, and Lord Windgrace each support a different flavor of Landfall — card draw, go-wide tokens, or graveyard value.
- Run more lands than usual: Landfall decks want a higher land count than a typical Commander deck, often 38-42, since lands are your payoff engine, not just your mana base.
- Add fetchlands: Include as many fetchlands and similar sacrifice-and-search lands as your budget allows for double landfall triggers.
- Add extra land drop effects: Run 4-6 sources like Exploration or Azusa to multiply your landfall triggers each turn.
- Add landfall payoffs: Run 8-12 payoff cards like Avenger of Zendikar, Rampaging Baloths, and Scute Swarm.
- Add land recursion: Include Crucible of Worlds or Ramunap Excavator to keep replaying lands from your graveyard.
- Test and iterate: Play your deck and see how often you're triggering landfall each turn. Cut cards that don't pull their weight.
Checking Your Landfall Deck with Rate My Decks
When you analyze your deck with Rate My Decks, we detect your deck's archetype and compare it to the optimal build for that strategy. If your Landfall deck is light on fetchlands or extra land drop effects, we'll flag it as a weakness. If you're missing key payoff cards for the number of landfall triggers you can generate, we'll recommend additions to help your deck reach its full potential.
